The first trailer has been released for Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka's new horror movie Totally Killer, and if you love a bit of '80s nostalgia, this one is definitely for you.

Set on Halloween night, Totally Killer sees Shipka as Jamie, a teenager who just wants to have fun with her friends but is dealing with her overprotective mother (played by Modern Family star Julie Bowen).

But Jamie's mum has a good reason to be overprotective: 35 years ago, her friends were murdered by a man known as the Sweet Sixteen Killer.

When Jamie herself comes face to face with the masked murderer, she finds herself transported back in time to 1987, where she must try to stop the killer before he starts his spree.

While the trailer references Back to the Future, Totally Killer is giving Hot Tub Time Machine crossed with Halloween vibes, making for a very entertaining modern slasher movie.

Totally Killer is set to be released by Prime Video on October 6.

Totally Killer also stars Olivia Holt as the teenage version of Jamie's mother Pam, with Jonathan Potts, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro and Ant-Man actor Randall Park in supporting roles.

Meanwhile, Bowen spoke earlier this year about the downside of being seen in public with Nolan Gould, who played her son Luke in Modern Family.

"I live really close to Nolan and I see him a lot," Bowen said, explaining that it often leads to rumours that they're dating.

"We actually went out the other night. It's fun when you go out with someone from Modern Family, they're like [mock gasps] and plus they're like, 'Is it like a Brady Bunch situation?' Because didn't Mrs Brady... with Greg?"

Totally Killer hits Prime Video on October 6.
