Thanksgiving, the new horror film starring Patrick Dempsey, has unveiled its first teaser trailer.

The latest project from Eli Roth has been over 15 years in the making, with the film being based on a fake trailer that was shown during 2007’s Grindhouse, the project that included Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof.

The film follows a killer known only as John Carver, who uses the Thanksgiving holiday to terrorise the inhabitants of the town where the tradition was started. The minute-long trailer serves as a compilation for the film’s deaths, which are suitably gnarly for fans of the genre.

Though the main characters are given barely any screen time in the trailer, Thanksgiving boasts a creditable cast including Addison Rae, Jalen Thomas Brooks and Gina Gershon, with Dempsey playing the town’s sheriff.

The star, who played Derek Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy, recently reprised his role as Robert in Disenchanted, the sequel to the 2007 Disney film Enchanted. Despite being released 15 years after the original, Dempsey revealed that the role was still “freeing.”

“Getting into the larger than life [aspect of the film] was completely freeing and really fun – it was a fantastic ride,” he said. “I had a great time where I could work a little bit, do some sightseeing in Ireland, and work on the musical that was great fun with the singing and the dancing.”

In addition to Thanksgiving, Dempsey will also star in Michael Mann’s Ferrari, which recently had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.

Dempsey’s role in Michael Mann’s film involved sporting a new hair colour, and the actor revealed he was enjoying the production, saying: “I'm having a great time. I'm getting to drive a lot of fast cars. I play a race car driver called Piero Taruffi – it's a dream job.”

Thanksgiving is set to be released in US cinemas on November 17.
