Sanctuary, the new film featuring Maid star Margaret Qualley, has released its first trailer.

The thriller-comedy, which also stars Christopher Abbott, follows a dominatrix (Qualley) and her wealthy client (Abbott) as they “engage in a high stakes role playing game for power and control.”

The logline for the film, which is the sophomore feature from Zachary Wigon, reads: “In the wake of inheriting his father’s hotel chain, Hal attempts to end his long and secret relationship with Rebecca.

“A battle of wills ensues over the course of one incredibly fraught night, with both Rebecca and Hal struggling to keep the upper hand as the power dynamics swing wildly back and forth,” it continues.

The tense and playful trailer showcases the cat-and-mouse affair as the pair seek to assert their authority, with the game promising both a mental and occasionally physical battle.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, with its theatrical release coming on May 25 in the US; there are currently no details on a UK release date.

Qualley, who has also starred in The Leftovers and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work on Maid, where she played lead character Alex Russell.

Though originally billed as a limited series, there have been rumours that Netflix could renew Maid for a second season, with the creator of the show revealing she was “in love” with the characters.

“I will say this [show] is such a labour of love,” said Molly Smith Metzler. “I'm in love with all these characters, and I could write Alex for the rest of my life. You know, she's just in my heart. But I do feel like we tell her story, so I'm not sure what it would look like.

“I think it would be very exciting and a dream world to get to see a different maid's story in another season. Someone from a totally different geographic with totally different life experience and who is probably a mom,” she added.

Sanctuary will be released in the US on May 25; there is currently no UK release date.
