Netflix has dropped a first trailer for Lucifer's Tom Ellis and Gina Rodriguez's rom-com Players.

Releasing on Valentine's Day, the film from Pitch Perfect 3 director Trish Sie follows protagonist Mack (Rodriguez, who also serve as executive producer). She's a sports journalist resorting to "plays" to land a series of hook ups that are discarded as quickly as they are picked up.

Mack's established method proves ineffective when she falls hard for New York's most eligible bachelor, charming war correspondent Nick Russell (Ellis).

Determined to make Nick stick around, Mack summons her group of ride-or-die friends, who also take part in all sorts of ruses to bag a one-night stand. Will they come up with a plan to win Nick over for good?

The first step is simple: Mack needs to discover what Nick likes doing when he's in town and casually start hanging out at those same places.

In the trailer, this scheme seems to be working as Mack and Nick eventually go on a first date and appear to have great chemistry. However, things may go awry when Mack's pals remind her that she may be losing herself in an effort to keep Nick interested for the long haul.

Alongside Rodriguez and Ellis, Players also stars Damon Wayans Jr as Mack's best friend Adam, as well as Joel Courtney (The Kissing Booth), Augustus Prew (The Morning Show), Liza Koshy (Work It), Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live), and Marin Hinkle (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) in supporting roles.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez will next be seen in the second series of supernatural comedy Not Dead Yet, airing on ABC in the US from February 7 (in the UK, it will be released on Disney+). The show, which premiered last year, sees the Jane the Virgin star as obituaries writer Nell Serrano, who discovers she's able to speak with the dead person she's writing about.

Players lands on Netflix on February 14.
