The trailer opens with an elderly Joe Rantz (Game of Thrones' Ian McElhinney), who helped row the team to victory, saying: "There are some moments in life you'll never forget."

"The depression hit everyone hard. No jobs, no food. We were broke," he continues, before the footage cuts to a young Joe (Fantastic Beasts' Callum Turner) joining his university rowing team in order to make some cash.

We then watch as the team of underdogs overcome the odds and grab the attention of their nation by rowing all the way to the Olympics.

Previously explaining what audiences can expect from the film, Clooney said: "Rowing, particularly in the 1920s, was the number one attended sport in the United States.

"The Boys in the Boat is about strong, tough kids, but they were poor and hungry. They're rowing because it was the only way they could stay in college. The stakes were much higher for them, and it gave them an edge."

The Boys in the Boat is released in US cinemas on December 25, 2023, and in the UK on January 12, 2024.
