The emotional first trailer for Euphoria star Colman Domingo's new movie Sing Sing has been released.

The film follows the true story of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program, which was founded at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York to allow prisoners to act in and produce theatre projects.

The movie from director Greg Kwedar is also notable for starring real-life former inmates, many of whom took part in the program.

Domingo plays the role of John 'Divine G' Whitfield, who forms a friendship with fellow inmate Clarence 'Divine Eye' Maclin (played by himself) as they stage a production of Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code alongside the group.

In the trailer, Whitfield explains: “It’s been a program that was established to help people get more in touch with their feelings and truly get some rehabilitation… and it’s turned into something, I don’t know, wonderful.”

"We're here to become human again, and enjoy the things that is not in our reality," another inmate adds, before Paul Raci's Brent Buell notes: "I think you guys are becoming real with each other, vulnerable."

Sing Sing is based on the 2005 Esquire article 'The Sing Sing Follies', and has been written by Kwedar and Clint Bentley.

It has already attracted acclaim from critics following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, currently sitting at 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Domingo is currently in the running for the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Rustin, with the 2024 Academy Award winners set to be announced this weekend.

Sing Sing is set to be released in US cinemas in July. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
