The first trailer for the critically acclaimed Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest has arrived in time for awards season.

The World War II drama is the latest from director British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, who has had previous hits with the Oscar-nominated Sexy Beast and Scarlett Johansson's sci-fi thriller Under the Skin.

The Zone of Interest takes place at the Auschwitz concentration camp and is told from the perspective of real-life high-ranking Nazi official Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig.

Höss was so entrenched in the atrocities of the Holocaust that he built his family's home and a garden right next to the infamous death camp.

The Nazi official is played in The Zone of Interest by German actor Christian Friedel (Netflix's Parfum and Babylon Berlin) and Sandra Hüller (I'm Your Man) appears as Hedwig.

The Zone of Interest premiered this past spring at the Cannes Film Festival, and has since won the Grand Prize from the International Federation of Film Critics. It has also been selected as Britain's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars.

The film has scored a 95% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising director Jonathan Glazer for his unflinching look at the horrors of the Holocaust. A sampling of early reviews are presented below:

BBC

"Glazer raises the question of how much suffering we are all willing to ignore, just because it's happening in another part of the world, or just outside our homes, or beyond our own zone of interest."

The Atlantic

"Under the Skin director Jonathan Glazer's latest film, which tracks a family living just outside Auschwitz, casts an unsettling chill that's hard to shake."

Collider

"Glazer's latest fits within his distinct style, breaking down a genre and working with the skeleton that's left over in order to get at the heart of what makes these stories so jarring."

Total Film

"Jonathan Glazer's haunting Holocaust movie explores everyday evil and proves the peripheral atrocities are impossible to ignore. A singular piece of work."

Wall Street Journal

"The film is a chillingly bleak reminder that ordinary people can be complicit in the most barbaric acts."

Entertainment Weekly

"It's a stark reminder of our complicity and the capacity for great evil in the most mundane of circumstances. I'll never forget the experience of watching it, even if I can't ever bring myself to endure it again."
