Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor's new thriller film.

The actress, best known for playing Daphne Bridgerton in the hit Netflix series, takes on the lead role of Emily in Fair Play, whose relationship with colleague and fiancé Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) turns sour following a career-defining promotion at their cut-throat New York financial firm.

Viewers get their first glimpse of Dynevor in action in the new trailer, in addition to a surprising sex scene teased between the warring couple, that's certainly set to make a lasting impression.

The trailer begins with Emily and Luke enjoying time together as a happy couple.

"We're getting married," Emily says excitedly to her fiancé in an intimate scene, who replies: "I wish we could tell the whole world."

It soon transpires that the two have chosen to keep their relationship (and engagement) a secret from work colleagues, with a polite and platonic exchange between the two in a lift going on to confirm this.

"We're going to have to tell them sooner than later," Emily says. "You think it's the right time to admit we're breaking policy?" questions Luke.

As it happens, timing is not on their side, with the action jumping to a scene of a disgruntled co-worker smashing up his office after being given the boot.

Emily gets some inside gossip that Luke is being eyed as a replacement. "I heard it on a call," she says, informing him of the news.

Enter Eddie Marsan of recent The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe fame, who appears as the firm's intimidating CEO.

In the ensuing scene, Emily gets invited out for drinks with the CEO and his senior executives where she's told she's landed the coveted role after making "half the big calls last quarter alone".

She returns to the flat to share news of her promotion with Luke, who shares his hesitant congratulations. Emily apologises, but Luke is quick to respond: "Why, I'm so happy for you."

As Emily settles into her new role, her fiancé looks on begrudgingly. In one office scene, Emily asks Luke to look into a matter for her, but Luke says he's too busy to do the task.

"OK, well, make this one the priority," she pointedly replies, raising eyebrows for her curt response from co-workers in the room.

We see the couple next in a bar after work, with Emily offering to buy Luke a drink. "Can I buy you another," she says, with Luke quipping back: "Now you make more money than me".

The remark is the first telling detail of his jealousy of Emily and her new job.

"What are you doing?" he asks his wife-to-be in the next confronting scene. "You know it's just a game," she responds. "Well, you play it very well," says Luke.

As tensions rise between the two in the workplace, Emily admits they can't keep working together, only for Luke to assert that "he's not quitting".

Luke goes on to make his ambition clear to Marsan's character in a public display in front of colleagues.

"This firm has become my religion, you have become my god," he declares. "You give me this opportunity, I will give you everything I got."

It's clear that Emily is struggling with her fiancé's ruthless and erratic behaviour. "You're going to end our relationship by setting off a bomb," she tells him.

A tense montage follows of the couple fighting, Emily crying and Luke thrashing out in anger.

"Why is it so hard to accept that I deserve that job," Emily asks Luke, who barks back: "I never got the shot."

"This job, it's killing us," Emily concludes, as the Fair Play trailer draws to a close.

The film earned rave reviews after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival this year, which no doubt led to the subsequent Netflix deal.

The erotic thriller will enjoy a limited UK cinematic release, before being released on Netflix in early October.

Fair Play will be released in select UK cinemas from October 6 and will arrive on Netflix on October 13.
