Peter Dinklage's new movie The Toxic Avenger has premiered at Fantastic Fest 2023, earning positive reviews from critics.

A remake of the 1984 cult classic, the film from director Macon Blair (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) follows a janitor with a terminal illness who falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a superhero.

Starring Dinklage as protagonist Winston Gooze, the film chronicles the unlikely hero's race to save his son, his friends and his community from greed and corruption.

Alongside the Game of Thrones star, The Toxic Avenger also features Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood, Gavin & Stacey's Julia Davis, Room's Jacob Tremblay, Zola's Taylour Paige, Evil Dead's Jane Levy and Kevin Bacon, while director Blair also appears in a role.

Following the film's debut, let's see what critics had to say about The Toxic Avengers, currently at a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes (of course, the rating is likely to change once more reviews come in).

Variety

"This is largely a fans-only proposition, which isn't necessarily a bad thing."

Collider

"A bonkers & bloody delight. Macon Blair's Toxic Avenger is a hugely enjoyable & rowdy escape that also feels like a celebration of movie magic, especially the wild things one can create with ingenuity, practical effects & a lot of passion for the genre."

IndieWire

"Here, 'agreeably stupid' is the order of the day... It's a deliberate choice on the filmmaker's part – one that will alienate much of the film's potential audience, but will appeal to those already primed to snicker their way through it."

Inverse

"You don't need to have seen Troma's cult classic The Toxic Avenger to appreciate the inhumanity that director Macon Blair unsubtly orchestrates with his excessively out-of-bounds remake – but it helps."

Austin Chronicle

"If anything, this Toxie is even easier to root for, even more charming and sad amongst the silliness."

A general release date for The Toxic Avenger is yet to be announced.
