The first trailer for Strange Darling, an upcoming horror-thriller starring Reacher's Willa Fitzgerald and Smile's Kyle Gallner, has been released.

Directed by JT Mollner, the film stars Fitzgerald as an injured woman who is being hunted down by Gallner's relentless serial killer in the Oregon Wilderness.

In the tense new footage, Gallner's character is shown pursuing Fitzgerald's in a high-speed car chase before shooting out her vehicle's back windscreen.

Although she manages to escape her attacker by making a run for it through the woods, it's clear the hunt is far from over.

Strange Darling also stars Better Call Saul actor Ed Begley Jr and Black Swan's Barbara Hershey.

Discussing the cat-and-mouse thriller with Variety, Mollner said: "This film was a sort of dream (or nightmare) that I was compelled to bring to life. So much about it – the colours, the music, the overall visual aesthetic, and the characters were all so clear before we even shot anything.

"I really just wanted it to be one hell of a ride. We knew we would live or die with casting and it turns out, the performances are the pillars of this movie."

Fitzgerald starred as police officer Roscoe Conklin in the first season of Prime Video's Reacher TV series last year, though she won't be making an appearance in the second outing this December.

"I did know that from the get-go. I think that's a great opportunity to get to tell a clean and complete story, and then be able to walk away. I think it's a unique experience in TV," she told Digital Spy.

"Oftentimes, you think you're going to get another season, and you don't get another season, and you're abruptly cut off. Or you think you're going to keep doing it, and then something else intervenes.

"So it's nice to have the agency to know that that is a complete, finished product. And it was also great to be able to start off the whole Reacher world."

Strange Darling premieres at FantasticFest this week, whilst a wider cinema release date is yet to be announced. Reacher season 2 will air on Prime Video in December.
