The first images have landed for Melissa Barrera's new movie Your Monster.

The film, which will premiere in the Midnight section at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, is a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster itself, blending romance, horror, comedy, and musical elements.

Written and directed by Caroline Lindy, Your Monster is based on her 2019 short film of the same name and was shot in only 20 days.

The synopsis reads: "After her life falls apart, soft-spoken actress Laura Franco finds her voice again when she meets a terrifying, yet weirdly charming Monster living in her closet."

As the first images show, the film looks visually stunning, with one image looking to show Barrera's character in a musical montage.

Alongside Barrera the film also stars The Mindy Project's Tommy Dewey and Edmund Donovan.

Speaking about the film back in June, Barrera said: "I shot a movie in February, in Hoboken. It’s called Your Monster and it’s a horror rom-com musical.

"My character is a musical theatre actor, so there’s a musical in the movie. There’s a lot of singing and dancing in it.

"And it’s like a rom-com with elements of horror. It’s scary at times, and really funny at times. And it’s everything that I love in a movie combined into one. So I’m excited to see how that turns out," she added.

Barrera is best known for her roles in the 2022 reboot of the Scream franchise and its sequel Scream VI as Sam Carpenter.

The actress was meant to be appearing in the seventh instalment of the franchise, however she was axed from the film last month, reportedly due to comments she made about the Israel-Palestine conflict on social media.

Barrera would later address the reports on her Instagram Story in a lengthy post where she condemned antisemitism and Islamophobia and added: "As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need."

She continued: "Every person on this earth — regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status — deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom. I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism.”

“I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom."

Barrera ended her post by writing: "Silence is not an option for me.”
