Joaquin Phoenix and Ridley Scott's Napoleon Bonaparte film has released its first image as its release date is confirmed.

The film, titled Napoleon, is being released by Apple TV+ and Sony Pictures Releasing — which means it's getting both a streaming and a theatrical launch. Napoleon will debut in cinemas on November 22 before hitting Apple TV+ at a later (but yet unspecified) date.

Befitting a film telling the story of one of history's best-known military commanders, the first-released image of Napoleon shows men riding horseback into battle.

Napoleon will chronicle how Bonaparte (played by Phoenix) rose to power in France at the end of the 1700s and also show his volatile relationship with Empress Joséphine. She's being played by The Crown's Vaness Kirby, who stepped in after Killing Eve's Jodie Comer had to drop out due to scheduling issues.

The film isn't just a reunion for Phoenix and Scott after Gladiator but also for the director and David Scarpa, who wrote the script for Scott's 2017 film All the Money in the World.

As for lead actor Phoenix, he's currently filming the Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, and loads of photos from the outdoor shoot have been appearing online. The latest pics show the actor and Lady Gaga, who's starring in the sequel as Harley Quinn, donning their clown make-up in a famous location from the first film.

Phoenix has also got a new film out this month (next month in the UK) titled Beau Is Afraid, from Midsommar and Hereditary director Ari Aster. The synopsis and trailer showed us that the film is a pretty weird affair, but the people who got to see it early at a recent screening have tweeted that the film is absolutely bananas.

Napoleon will be released in cinemas on November 22.
