Daisy Ridley's new real-life movie Young Woman and the Sea has released some first-look images ahead of the film's release.

The movie is based on the 2022 book by Glenn Stout of the same name, and it tells the true story of the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel.

While originally slated to launch on streaming platform Disney+, Young Woman and the Sea will now get a limited theatrical release and will hit UK and US cinemas on May 31.

Star Wars actress Ridley plays the lead role of competitive swimmer Gertrude 'Trudy' Ederle, the daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan who won gold at the 1924 Olympics.

In 1926, Trudy decided to take on a new challenge and cross the Channel, a feat that at this point had never been undertaken by a woman.

The synopsis reads: "Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement: a 21-mile trek from France to England."

Ahead of the film's release, PEOPLE has released some first-look images from the film, which show Ridley in action as Trudy.

In a statement, Ridley said: "The most surprising thing about this story is how few people know what Trudy did. What she accomplished was not only a personal achievement, but ground breaking for women in sport.

"I'm excited for people to see this film in all its beauty and experience this journey, with all its difficulty and hope and ultimately joy."

Young Woman and the Sea has an all-star cast which, alongside Ridley, also includes Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Stephen Graham (Line of Duty), Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve) and Tilda Cobham-Hervey (I Am Woman).

Director Joachim Rønning, who is currently working on Tron: Ares, said about the movie: "As a father of two teenage daughters, I really wanted to make a film that resonated with them, about a girl that changed the world."

Young Woman and the Sea will be released in cinemas on May 31.
