"Anna and Ryan have found true love," reads the film's official synopsis. "It's been proven by a controversial new technology. There's just one problem: Anna still isn't sure.

"Then she takes a position at a love testing institute, and meets Amir."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Riz Ahmed stars as Amir, Anna's charming colleague. They work together on a series of love-building activities that help develop the bond between the couples matched by the institute's machine.

Luke Wilson of Legally Blonde fame is another supporting cast member. He plays institute head Duncan who instructs Anna, Amir and co to determine and strengthen couples' pairings via the mysterious test.

The film has already generated some buzz, being officially selected at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where its international premiere will take place on September 12.

Fingernails is the first English-language film by Greek director Christos Nikou, who also co-wrote the screenplay.

He received critical acclaim for his directorial debut Apples, which told the story of a worldwide pandemic that causes sudden amnesia.

TIFF's Dorota Lech said the movie comments "on our desire for certainty and our reliance on technology".

"[Nikou's] refreshing voice and dexterous aesthetic combine to create an unflinching warning about what may be if we lose connection to our most primal instincts," she added.

Fingernails will enjoy a limited theatrical release at select New York and Los Angeles cinemas in late October, before arriving on AppleTV+ in November.

Fingernails will be released on AppleTV+ on November 3.
