Firefighters working to contain Arizona blaze that’s exceeded 2,500 acres

Firefighters had contained 20% of a sprawling blaze in Arizona that exceeded 2,500 acres by Saturday night, authorities said.

The Arizona State Forestry said fire officials were “making progress” on the Copper Canyon Fire more than a day after it began near Globe, a city about 87 miles east of Phoenix.

Officials said the wildfire was recorded at 2,560 acres on Saturday, but noted activity had greatly decreased on the eastern edge of the blaze, which was the most active area, the InciWeb tracking system said.

“The threat to surrounding values at risk, including mining infrastructure, ranches, and grazing allotments has significantly decreased,” reads a post on the InciWeb website.

“There are no evacuations at this time.”

Video shared by Arizona State Forestry late Saturday showed a plane flying overhead and dumping a pink chemical over the area.

The organization has continued to chronicle the firefighters work toward combating the blaze through posts on social media, and said crews would continue to work overnight Saturday on the northern portion of the fire.

The U.S. 60 highway was closed due to “public safety concerns” after “significant guardrail damage” was recorded, according to InciWeb, with officials slated to look into the road shutdown on Sunday.
