Firefighters in California Race to Rescue 2-Year-Old Retriever Mix Trapped in Wall

A dog named Faye in Orange County is safe after firefighters had to use sledgehammers to free her after she was trapped inside of a wall next to a bathroom in Garden Grove, California.

Faye was trapped inside of the wall for over two hours.

WBKO reports "At first I thought she could still, I thought there was space for her to move,” Julian Nguyen, Faye’s owner, said. “So, I was getting my hand kneeling down and trying to reach my arm all the way through to pull her back but she was way too far inside.”

Nguyen said he then tried to entice Faye out with some chicken on a fork, thinking the dog would be able to turn around and get to it.

When she wouldn’t budge for the chicken, he knew something was wrong."

If a dog won't come out for chicken, that's when you know it's time to call the professionals!

It seemed that Faye had climbed into an access door about six months ago but it was filled with plumbing equipment so they never assumed that she would get trapped in there. Thank goodness they were able to get Faye out with no injuries.

How Firefighters Train To Rescue Animals

Not only are firefighters trained to rescue humans, firefighters also go through training to learn how to rescue both domestic animals and wildlife.

Basic Animal Rescue Training or BART,  has been designed to provide firefighters, law enforcement, and EMS personnel with not only the first responder-type skills necessary to provide basic medical care, BLS resuscitation skills, and animal rescue techniques, but also the animal specific equipment necessary to accomplish it.

Firefighters learn about the behavior patterns of different animals and understanding how animals may react in stressful situations helps them anticipate movements and plan their rescue strategies accordingly. Firefighters use things like animal rescue poles, stretchers, and inflatable rescue boats for water rescues.

Firefighters often work with animal control officers and veterinary professionals during animal rescue operations, and they learn how to rescue animals in all sorts of situations, like fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, animals trapped in mud or in extreme temperatures.

Firefighters work so hard to save humans, and animals, and so many animals have been saved thanks to these brave heroes. Including dogs who have gotten stuck in walls like Faye!
