Fire erupts at old GM plant in Shreveport

Smoke could be seen from 220 over Cross Lake Wednesday morning when the cooling towers at the old General Motors plant went up in flames.

Just after 9:30 a.m. Caddo Fire District 3 was dispatched to the 7600 block of Antoine Blvd. on reports of a fire. Upon arrival, officers began battling the fire and placed it under control in 45 minutes.

Five fire units were dispatched from Caddo Fire District 3 and 13 Shreveport fire units aided in the efforts to place the fire under control.

Chief Ernest Mitchell from District 3 said they were able to place the fire under control before spreading to the pump house and electrical pumps.

No injuries were reported from civilians or first responders.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
