Fire company leaders opening Rita's Italian Ice franchise in Chambersburg

Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard will open in Chambersburg this week, just in time for summer.

The purveyor of a rotating selection of 75 flavors of Italian ice plus frozen custard, Gelatis and other cool treats will open on Wednesday at 731 Wayne Ave., according to a news release.

About 25 employees will comprise the "treat team," as Rita's calls its workforce. Workers' responsibilities include making fresh Italian ice daily.

The new store, located across the street from Patriot Federal Credit Union, is one of about 550 Rita's locations across 30 states. There are also stores nearby in Shippensburg and Hagerstown, Md.

The new Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard at 731 Wayne Ave., Chambersburg, has outdoor seating for 60 people and a drive-thru.

Rita's franchisees are Franklin Fire Co. couple

Rita's was established in 1984 after a Philadelphia firefighter whipped up a frozen treat with real fruit and named it after his wife, according to a news release.

Now, a firefighter is responsible for bringing Rita's to Chambersburg.

Franchisees Mark and Kaila Trace are both part of Franklin Fire Co. He has been the fire chief there for nearly two decades, and she serves as treasurer.

"We are beyond excited to bring Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard to the Chambersburg community," the Traces said in a news release. "For us, this venture is more than just a business opportunity; it's a chance to create something truly special that reflects our family values and brings joy to Chambersburg."
