A large fire has broken out at a former social club in Hartlepool.

Firefighters were called to the town's disused Engineers Club building in Raby Road, after the alarm was raised at 19:40 BST.

Cleveland Fire Brigade has urged people living nearby to close their windows and to avoid the area.

A total of eight crews from Billingham, Middlesbrough, Saltburn, Stockton, Thornaby and Yarm remained at scene on Tuesday night.

Cleveland Police said its officers would remain at the scene.

"Although there is no threat to members of the public, officers advise that people avoid the area and nearby residents should close windows to avoid the volume of smoke entering their home," the force said.
