NASCAR Reveals Joey Logano's Cheated-Up GloveNASCAR

Before Saturday’s race activities took off at Las Vegas Motor Speedway NASCAR showed teams and journalists exactly how Joey Logano’s left glove broke safety measures last week at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Before the start of Sunday’s Cup race, Logano was sent to the back of the field for modifying a piece of S.F.I. equipment breaking Rule 14.3.1.1. It was stated that a harsher penalty would be assessed for the safety aspect to come out later in the week.

When the dust from Atlanta’s wild finish cleared, Logano and the Penske No. 22 team were left with a $10,000 fine.

It was presumed by early photos and video shots provided to the public that the area between the thumb and first forefinger was webbed, today it was revealed that the entire glove was creating a solid blocking surface.

As NASCAR played show and tell with the garage it was explained exactly why this was considered a competitive advantage and a safety issue.

“The drivers do put their hand up against the opening,” A NASCAR representative explained. “We've never really had a rule against it but this obviously goes one step further and this becomes not only a competition problem but if it becomes a safety violation because that glove is no longer SFI-approved.

"Regardless of what the materials is made of, regardless of who put it on there, it’s not as delivered and it’s not as tested.”

It was also clarified that he broke 14.3.1.1. A & B & F clauses.

Section 14.3.1.1. A: It is the responsibility of the driver, not NASCAR, to ensure that he/she maintains, wears, and properly uses protective clothing and equipment.

Section 14.3.1.1.B: Protective clothing and equipment must be worn, maintained, and used in accordance with the manufacturer/supplier directions.

Section 14.3.1.1.F: During an Event, drivers must comply with Driver Protective Clothing/Equipment Requirements.

Road & Track’s own Bozi Tatarevic took a deep dive into the infraction this week and explained exactly the benefit that Logano would get by having a larger surface area to use in blocking the draft by the driver-side window.

With presumably SFI-approved gloves, Joey Logano clinched the Pole for Sunday's Pennzoil 400 Presented By Jiffy Lube.
