Volkswagen revealed a prototype of its upcoming ID.7 sedan on Wednesday, giving us our first look at the all-electric Tesla Model 3 fighter before it goes on sale later this year.

Following the retro-inspired ID. Buzz van, the ID.7 will be Volkswagen's sixth all-electric production car in the ID family. It's based on the company's wide-reaching MEB platform, but gets its own unique sloping roof and front end, designed to reduce energy consumption and increase range through aerodynamic efficiency.

Aimed higher in the company's pricing bracket, it gets a number of new tech features to set it apart. The list includes an augmented reality head-up display, a 15-inch infotainment screen, and digitally controlled air vents. VW has yet to reveal drivetrain details, but says the ID.7 will be able to achieve a range of 434 miles on Europe's WLTP cycle.

The prototype you see here has been fitted with unique camouflaged paintwork that can light up the car in different ways. There are 40 layers of paint overall, with 22 areas of the car able to be lit separately, allowing for endless patterns and flashes of colors. Inside you'll find VW's familiar all-touch capacitive interior layout, which includes touch sliders for things like climate control and volume. VW said last year it plans to put buttons back into its cars starting in 2023, but apparently, it's not there yet.

Volkswagen says it will reveal the production ID.7 in the second quarter of 2023, but doesn't mention when it'll go on sale. In the meantime, this trippy prototype will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 5-8.
