‘Finally a flag worth flying’ or ‘hideous’: What do you think of Kansas City’s new look?

City of Kansas City, Missouri

Raise your flag, Kansas City. You have a new design to add to your flagpoles.

The City of Kansas City revealed its brand-new flag Thursday after the city council approved the design by a 10-1 vote. The flag was designed by Jared Horman, creative director for Kansas City.

The design features the city’s iconic fountain logo in front of a red and blue backdrop. In a graphic posted by Mayor Quinton Lucas, the red and blue illustrate Kansas City’s welcoming spirit for all.

“I am proud to see the update of our official Kansas City flag, which encapsulates Kansas City as the Heart of the Nation, recognizes our heritage as the City of Fountains, and represents the kind hearts and welcoming nature of Kansas Citians,” Lucas said in a statement. “As our city sees tremendous growth and success in recent years, I look forward to our flag being a widely recognized symbol of our community for all.”

Lucas later tweeted for recommendations on where to get this design tattooed on him.

The design has KC social media buzzing with thoughts. Some like it, while others believe it could be worse, but it’s a major improvement over the former flag.

The flag drew a lot of mixed reviews, with some praising the new design and some thinking it’s a bad design:

It’s another milestone in the history of Kansas City’s rebranding. The Star dove deep into the city’s logo evolution in this KCQ, which shows how the city went from paperclip seals to what residents see all over town today.
