Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s New Trailer Feels Packed With Secrets

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a little over a month away, and in the leadup to its release, publisher Square Enix is pulling out all the stops in marketing it. Now, the company has released a new trailer for the upcoming game, and I can’t help but feel like there’s more to it than meets the eye.

The new Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth trailer is called Destined for Rebirth, and it’s got a big focus on Sephiroth, the big bad of the Final Fantasy 7 universe. We first see the shampoo addict Sephiroth laying waste to a village, as he tends to do, a shot of Zack – very much not dead – with Cloud draped over his shoulder, and a quick montage of characters reacting to something.

“He wants to finish what he started,” Cloud says in a somber tone, “And rule over the planet.”

We see Sephiroth about to stab somebody, before cutting away to Yuffie and a delightful montage of combat scenes. The combat looks very flashy and dynamic, as we’ve seen in previous clips of the game, with some words thrown in every now and then in typical trailer fashion.

“Those destined for rebirth do not fear the unknown.”

It’s a pretty great trailer, and it certainly hints at a lot of big changes to the story we know and love. That said, I think there’s a lot of imagery here that’s a red herring. Cloud being carried by Zack is probably either a flashback or an alternate universe – we’ve seen evidence of this before – but I’m not sure I buy that Tifa is in any real danger, as the trailer suggests.

We’ve seen some fans on social media suggest that maybe Aerith won’t die in Rebirth, as she did in the original game. Sorry for the spoilers, but it’s an old game now, you’ve had time to play it. Perhaps, these fans theorize, Tifa will be killed instead, or maybe even Cloud.

Personally, I think Aerith won’t die, but I’m not sure anyone will die in her place. It’s a fun idea to mix things up, especially if Cloud ends up with his head on the chopping block, but I’m not sure Square is willing to go quite that far in reinventing the well-loved game. Still, it’s interesting to think about.

Either way, there’s undoubtedly plenty in the trailer that will set tongues wagging. We’re not going to scrape through it frame by frame to find all the secrets – we’ll leave that to you – but if Remake was anything to go by, there’s undoubtedly plenty to be discovered that’s going to shock everyone who plays it.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to be released exclusively on PS5 on February 29, 2024.
