Fetterman dressing like ‘junior high gamer’: Mike Huckabee

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) ripped Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) over the way he dresses, saying the senator degrades the office.

“You ran for United States Senate, you ought to dress the part,” Huckabee said in a Newsmax interview Tuesday. “You shouldn’t be dressed like a junior high gamer who is sitting in the basement eating a bag of Cheetos and playing PlayStation, and that’s what it appears like John Fetterman thinks he’s doing.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Sunday that the Senate will relax its dress code, allowing members to wear what they want on the floor. Previous rules required men to wear jackets and ties and women business attire.

The change has drawn ire toward Fetterman, who prefers to dress in sweatshirts and shorts rather than more traditional business dress.

Huckabee called the dress code change “absurd.”

“I understand there’s sort of a new casual code about life today, a lot of places have casual Friday, but grown men typically, to work at least, don’t wear hoodies, basketball shorts, and sneakers, and you know, kind of slump around,” Huckabee said.

“It just doesn’t look becoming, and I think [Fetterman] ought to put his big boy pants on and realize he ran for the U.S. Senate, not for student council in the seventh grade,” he continued.

A group of 46 Senate Republicans sent Schumer a letter Tuesday requesting the dress code change be reversed.

“Allowing casual clothing on the Senate floor disrespects the institution we serve and the American families we represent,” the group wrote. “The world watches us on that floor and we must protect the sanctity of that place at all costs.”

Fetterman, who said he did not request the change, has brushed off the criticism from his Republican colleagues and celebrated the new lack of dress code.

“America … it’s about freedom and choice,” Fetterman told The Hill. “It’s like [a] Burger King ‘You Rule’ kind of a thing.”
