SHOWTIME IS KNOWN for producing some of the best TV shows of the past decade, including Billions, The Chi, and Homeland, and their newest series is likely to join that elite list. Fellow Travelers has just premiered, and the eight-episode first season is full of star power and an intriguing plot.

The series stars Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey as Hawkins Fuller and Tim Laughlin, and it follows their decades-long romance after they first meet in the 1950s. But while the characters are fictional, they’ll experience real historical events like the McCarthy hearings, the Vietnam protests, the disco era, and the AIDS crisis. The historical span of the show is a key part of the story, and that wasn’t lost on the actors. “Just getting to play the character over the course of 35 years—some of the scenes that take place in the last episode for me were such a rite of passage in terms of saying goodbye to the character,” Bomer told Vanity Fair.

Noah J. Ricketts, who plays drag performer and activist Frankie Hines, also told Out Magazine that he hoped the show would help break down barriers “I think there’s something so beautiful and beautifully hard about being yourself in a world that is determined to hate you,” he said. “…it really forced me to look inward at the way I moved through the world and see if I’m coming out authentically, if I’m moving in the world authentically. And so I hope that as people watch this, they ask themselves that question so we can break down these barriers of hypermasculinity and feeling like we have to change who we are to subscribe to societal norms.”

The show has just premiered, so it’s not too late to add it to your watchlist. Here’s where you can watch and stream Fellow Travelers.
