Federal Protective Service officer killed during George Floyd protest in Oakland

A Federal Protective Officer was fatally shot and another critically injured Friday night amid Oakland, Calif., protests concerning George Floyd, who was killed in police custody earlier this week.

The two men who were shot worked for the Federal Protective Service of the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI confirmed to ABC News Saturday.

At the time of publication, neither officer’s name had been released.

Whether the fatal shooting and injury were linked to the protests is not yet known, though the incident is under investigation by the FBI and Oakland Police.

At least 18 people were arrested by local police and 60 who were suspected of looting during the protests were detained. Other agencies arrested four other people amid the protests, which left six Oakland officers injured along with seven additional members of law enforcement.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed Monday when a white Minneapolis cop, Derek Chauvin, arrested him and knelt on his neck for over eight minutes until Floyd, who was unarmed, couldn’t breathe.

Chauvin was stripped of his police officer title and on Friday, was finally charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
