The Kentucky Derby is home to so many of our favorite Southern traditions: the mint juleps, the infield parties, and, of course, all those over-the-top hats. There are times when you might want your outfit to err on the side of subtle, but the Kentucky Derby is not that time. At Churchill Downs, the more ornate the better when it comes to guest's dress, and this couldn't be more true for their hats.

Often called fascinators, the two words aren't necessarily interchangeable. A fascinator sits on only one side of the head and is usually attached using a headband or hairpins. A formal hat sits on the head completely on its own and covers the entirety. Both are 100% acceptable at Churchill Downs and it's totally up to you which you would prefer. While fascinators can lean a bit more elegant (they are the choice of the royals, after all), but wide-brim hats provide more sun protection, which can be essential on those Kentucky afternoons. Whether you're making your way to the Downs this year or headed to a local Derby party, you're sure to be one of the best dressed there with one of these choices.
