Exclusive: FAU basketball coach John Jakus' contract: $1 million per year for five years
John Jakus will earn a base salary of $1 million a year for five years to replace Dusty May as Florida Atlantic's new head men's basketball coach.
Jakus, 48, signed his contract Wednesday night, March 27, just four days after May resigned to take over at Michigan.
This is Jakus' first head coaching job at the college level. He comes to FAU from Baylor where he served two stints on Scott Drew's staff for a total of nine seasons, including the last three as the associate head coach. His base salary does not includes escalators, equaling $5 million for five years.
Jakus' buyout is 70 percent of what is remaining on the contract.
Jakus comes to Boca Raton after spending the last 12 seasons working under Drew and Gonzaga's Mark Few. He was Gonzaga's director of basketball operations for three years.
May led FAU to the 2023 Final Four and took the Owls to the NCAA Tournament the last two years, winning 60 games. The Owls season ended with a 77-62 overtime loss to Northwestern Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
May signed a 10-year extension a year ago that paid him $1.25 million in 2023-24 and would have increased by 5 percent each year until 2033. The total base salary would have come to more than $15.7 million over the 10 years.
May will receive an average base salary of $3.75 million for five years from Michigan. In 2022-23, the year he took FAU to the Final Four, May made $545,000, not including bonuses.
