One killed, two hurt as police chase ends with crash at McGalliard and Tillotson in Muncie

MUNCIE, Ind. — A crash at one of Muncie's busiest intersections, stemming from a police chase that apparently began in Henry County, resulted in a fatality early Thursday.

The crash — at McGalliard Road and Tillotson Avenue — was reported to emergency dispatchers at 6:04 a.m. Thursday by law enforcement officers from Henry County.

According to Melissa Criswell, deputy chief of the Muncie Police Department, the crash involved the vehicle that was being pursued by Henry County authorities and a "third party vehicle."

The person killed was a passenger in the vehicle being chased, the deputy chief said.

The drivers of both vehicles involved in the crash were taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, and were reported to be in critical condition.

"The pursuit originated from circumstances out of our jurisdiction," Criswell said in a release. "The Muncie Police Department was not involved in the pursuit."

Emergency dispatchers were reportedly informed the chase was entering Delaware County, and then had proceeded into Muncie city limits, before the collision.

The MPD's traffic reconstruction team was investigating the fatal crash, along with Indiana State Police.

Delaware County Coroner Gavin Greene was called to the scene.
