Man dead, thousands of power outages reported as storms hit central NC overnight

After severe thunderstorms hit central North Carolina overnight, thousands are left without power Tuesday morning.

As of 9 a.m., Duke Energy reported outages for over 6,000 residents in the Triad and Triangle areas, southeastern NC, and areas east of Interstate 95. More than 400 Charlotte residents reported no power and over 300 in the Wilmington area.

Throughout Monday, central North Carolina anticipated strong wind gusts up to 75 mph, large hail, and lightning from the storms.

The storm began in the Piedmont Triad around 4 p.m. Monday and moved throughout the central part of the state until about 2 a.m.

Driver dead after crashing into Duke Energy truck

Late Monday night, a man crashed into a Duke Energy Truck on Six Forks Road near Sandy Forks Road, the Raleigh Police Department said.

Officers responded to the crash at about 11:56 p.m. The truck had pulled over to look into outages in the area.

Ryan Fox, 47, was driving a white sedan traveling southbound when he hit the truck. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from injuries.

Police said Tuesday morning that they suspect Fox was driving impaired.

The driver, who was not identified, of the Duke Energy truck was uninjured.

Weather forecast for Tuesday

Throughout central North Carolina, temperatures will be less warm, in the mid-80s, and less humid compared to Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

There could be some isolated thunderstorms in the northern and eastern parts of the state, but they are not expected to be severe.

Flights canceled, delayed at RDU

About 20 flights were canceled at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Tuesday morning by Delta, United Airlines, Southwest, Air Canada, and American Airlines.

Over 20 more flights were delayed going to and from RDU.

Travelers are asked to check their flight status through their airlines for any updates, delays, or cancellations.
