The fastest growing grocery chain in the country is coming to a Central Kentucky town

The fastest growing grocery chain in the country is opening a new Central Kentucky location. ALDI, which has a big fan following, is coming to Georgetown. The grocery store opens at 135 American Path near the intersection of US 25 and US 460-bypass at 8:55 a.m. Nov. 9.

The first 100 supermarket customers will get a gift bag filled with a ALDI Fan Favorites and a gift card.

During grand opening weekend Nov. 9-12, all shoppers can enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $500 ALDI gift card.

ALDI’s Kentucky expansion comes as Florida-based Publix also is moving into what has been solid Kroger territory.

What makes ALDI grocery stores special

ALDI stores are different: To get a cart, you deposit a quarter (which you get back when you return the cart.) Shoppers are encouraged to bring reusable bags; if you don’t, you can buy reusable ALDI bags (there are no single-use plastic bags.) You also can use cardboard boxes if there are some available. But you’ll be doing your own bagging.

ALDI is known for its fresh produce (delivered daily, according to the company) and for its lower prices (made possible by not paying for things like bags or baggers.)

And stuff in the store may look unfamiliar: 90 percent of the products are ALDI exclusive brands or private label. The store only recently added a limited selection of national brands.

If you want to visit and get familiar with the “ALDI way,” there are two ALDI stores in Lexington: 126 Rojay Dr. off Nicholasville Road by Fayette Mall and 1509 Colesbury Circle on the north side of town just off New Circle Road.

Stores are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and offer curbside pickup and grocery delivery.

ALDI fan reviews: Low prices, freshness guaranteed

The many ALDI fans rave about the lower prices and the freshness of the fruit and vegetables, among other things. ALDI stores also carry lots of dietary options including organic, plant-based and gluten-free.

“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier, and we’ve been voted the price leader for six years running,” said Laura Bauer, Greenwood regional vice president for ALDI. “We’re excited to open our first ALDI store in Georgetown and introduce local customers to a new, more affordable way of shopping.”

ALDI also offers a Twice as Nice guarantee; if you aren’t 100% satisfied with a product, ALDI will replace it AND refund it.

The Albrecht Family was founded as the world’s first discount grocery in Germany; in 1976, they opened their first ALDI store in Iowa. Headquartered now in Batavia, Ill., ALDI has more than 2,000 stores and is growing fast — in the past decade they have added about 100 stores per year.
