This Fantasy Adventure Film Just Replaced ‘Murder Mystery 2’ as the Top Movie on Netflix

Sorry Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. While Murder Mystery 2 has been dominating on the Netflix charts ever since its release in late March, the movie just got dethroned by a brand-new fantasy adventure film titled Chupa.

Chupa is about a 13-year-old boy named Alex (Evan Whitten), who travels to Mexico to meet his extended family after he loses his father to cancer. While there, Alex is greeted by a chupacabra—a mythical creature that is considered dangerous—so he keeps the news of its presence hidden. However, he must fight to protect the creature when he learns that a group of scientists are hunting it down.

Chupa was released on Friday, April 7, and after only 48 hours, the movie has already jumped into the number-one spot on Netflix's list of most-watched films. It is currently sitting above both the Murder Mystery films and a number of childhood classics that are trending on the site, like Matilda, Shark Tale and Over the Hedge.

Along with Whitten, Chupa also stars Demián Bichir (A Better Life), Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), Nickolas Verdugo (The Prank Panel) and Alex Knight (Narcos: Mexico).

This heartfelt family drama was directed by Jonás Cuarón, a Mexican film director who is the son of Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Roma).

Jonás worked with his father on the Oscar-winning film Gravity, where the two penned the screenplay together. He has directed a few films over the years, including Year of the Nail, Desierto and Z. Currently, Jonás is working as a director on the Bad Bunny-starring Marvel film El Muerto, which will be a spinoff of the Spider-Man series.

We know what we're adding to our queue.
