Fantastic Five MetroWest & Milford high school athletes from Monday

These athletes definitely didn't have a case of the Mondays. They stood out and delivered for their teams to start the week off right.

Here are the Fantastic Five athletes for Monday, January 8 (including some weekend stragglers):

NICO BEGIC, Lincoln-Sudbury boys indoor track & field

The sophomore was named the MSTCA Freshman-Sophomore Invitational athlete of the meet Saturday. He won the 300-meter run in a meet-record 35.88 seconds and helped the Warriors capture the 4x200 relay championship. He's approaching the school record in the 300 in his first winter track season.

ADDY CAGAN, Algonquin girls hockey

The sophomore goalie posted her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Natick at the New England Sports Center on Monday. The Titans (4-3) snapped a two-game losing streak. Captain Emily Johns broke a scoreless deadlock in the third period with a unassisted goal, and Madelyn Glynn sealed the victory with an empty netter.

COCO CURRAN/MOLLY ROSS, Wayland/Weston girls hockey

The seniors had a goal and two assists each in a 4-3 win over Medford on Monday. Niall Cahalane and Angela An each found the net once, while Hailey Pelzar contributed an assist. Tilly Myles saved 15 shots.

GABBY PIERRE, Lincoln-Sudbury girls track & field

The junior was named the MSTCA Holiday Challenge Athlete of the Meet. She cleared 39 feet, 3 inches in the triple jump, setting a L-S school record. The jump ranks No. 5 in Massachusetts history. She qualified for the national championship in only her second attempt ever at the event.

JAGGER SANDFORD/CASEY MATIJEVIC, AMSA boys swimming & diving

Sandford qualified for sectionals in the 100 backstroke while winning that and the 200 freestyle in a 118-45 win over Grafton/Northbridge at Clark University. Matijevic, a senior captain, was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints for the Eagles (5-1).

WAYLAND 54, Diman 51: The Warriors (1-6) picked up their first win of the season Monday.

Boys swimming & diving

HOLLISTON/MEDWAY 91, Medfield 76: Lucas Haynes won the 200 freestyle for the Panthers (2-1) on Monday.

Girls swimming diving

MEDFIELD 96, Holliston/Medway 68: Alexa Montana finished first in the 100 butterfly for the Panthers (0-3) on Monday.

GRAFTON/NORTHBRIDGE 120, AMSA 51: Juda Guo won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Eagles (1-5) at Clark University on Monday.
