Every year, the Met Gala leads to debates and strong opinions as people consider if celebrities followed the theme, but this time around, fans quickly declared that Mindy Kaling perfectly "understood the assignment" with her outfit.

The actress arrived at the high-profile fashion event wearing a tan-colored gown by designer Gaurav Gupta that was called "The Melting Flower of Time," with Kaling describing the back—which was made of looping fabric flowing out behind her— as a flower "once blossoming and now melting." The fabric featured subtle sparkling stripes as it continued down her figure and into a large train.

Fans were immediately stunned by the look, with a top-liked comment on E! News' post about the dress saying, "Finally. Some[one] who understood the assignment 🙌."

Others said the same thing, as more called the look "breathtaking," "stunning," and "best dressed," while one fan wrote, "She ate this 💯."

On X, fans shared their opinion, saying, "This is what it means to be on theme," and "This is the kind of extra we want to see," as a third proclaimed, "Obsessed with a structural dress I eat this up every time."

Along with Kaling, other stars who stole the show immediately upon arriving at the 2024 Met Gala were Zendaya, a co-chair for this year's event, in her blue and green bold look, and her fellow co-chair Jennifer Lopez, whose glittery dress emulated butterfly wings as it flowed along her curves.

Kaling also attended the 2023 Met Gala, wearing an elegant sparkling dress by Jonathan Simkhai to fit the "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" theme.
