Fans Are Disappointed in Neil Patrick Harris After His Latest Post

Neil Patrick Harris is introducing the newest member of his family, but fans aren't here for it.

The How I Met Your Mother alum took to Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 15, to share his new French bulldog poppy, Chunk, with his fans, but their collective reaction was likely not what he was expecting when he uploaded the video.

The montage showed a variety of video clips and photos of "how it all went down" adding the surprise fourth pup to their brood, as a Hungarian breeder flew the dog, named for their love of The Goonies, to New York City where Harris and husband David Burtka's kids Harper and Gideon were stunned by the new arrival.

"Meet Chunk," he wrote on the social media platform. "We are enamored with this amazing French Bulldog. Except for the peeing everywhere. And the gnawing on everything. And the sibling rivalry. But otherwise, he’s the perfect addition to our family. Thanks @tom_kings_kennel for bringing Chunk into our lives. We’re in love! Oh, okay, gotta go, he just peed again."

Most comments were not fawning over the adorable puppy as he likely expected and the backlash was two-fold: plenty of comments simply read, "Adopt don’t shop 👎," while countless others pointed out the ethical implications of not only breeding in general, but specifically brachycephalic dogs—meaning breeds that have shortened snouts or flattened faces, resulting in narrow nostrils and constricted airways—such as pugs, bulldogs, and boxers.

"With a platform like yours, it is tremendously disappointing that you would promote a frenchie breeder. Not to mention that you live in California, the state with the highest shelter euthanasia rate in the country. So gross," one comment read.

"How disgusting to promote a Frenchie breeder. Wow. This is awful," another said.

"You so often set a wonderful example, but Frenchies cannot naturally be bred and you could have adopted not shopped. Imagine the impact you could have had. At minimum, at this point untag the breeder," someone else suggested.

Burtka jumped to the family's defense in the comments, writing, "We already have two rescues… and we do a lot for Northshore Animal league!" but commenters still weren't having it.

"So you support puppy mills? Weird take," one replied.

"you think that makes it better? YOU KNOW WHAT SHELTER DOGS GO THROUGH AND YOU STILL BOUGHT A DOG FROM A PUPPY MILL? This is even worse!!! Out of touch weirdos," another said.

"You could have made it three. There are plenty of Frenchies in shelters too," someone else pointed out.

Not long ago, Andy Cohen faced somewhat related criticism after sharing his reunion with the rescue dog he gave away.
