FAMU baseball breaks through late tie for first round SWAC Tournament victory over Southern

ATLANTA ― The Florida A&M Rattlers broke through after a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning to knock off the Southern Jaguars 8-5 Wednesday.

Cody Williams (3-1) got the win out of the bullpen for FAMU (28-25). The right-hander went two innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Caleb Granger started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering four runs, two earned, on nine hits, walking one and striking out five.

Offensively, the Rattlers were led by True Fontenot, who went 4-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBI. Janmikell Bastardo put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Ty Jackson also chipped in for FAMU, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two walks.

The Rattlers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Rattlers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Jaguars cut it to 3-1. FAMU pushed across a run on Fontenot's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Rattlers.

Southern came back to even the ballgame at four before FAMU reclaimed a 5-4 advantage in the sixth inning.

The Jaguars then tied up the ballgame at five before FAMU fought back to reclaim their advantage in the eighth inning. The three-run frame for the Rattlers was punctuated by a two-run homer from Bastardo. bringing the score to 8-5 in favor of FAMU. The score remained 8-5 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers held on for the win.

LEXINGTON, KY Joseph DeRosier's incredible debut season came to an end Wednesday (May 22) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The FAMU freshman qualified for the east prelims in the 110-meter hurdles and nearly advanced to the quarterfinals.

With the"Top 3" in each heat continuing on, DeRosier finished fourth in 13.96, behind competitors from Auburn (13.44), Coastal Carolina (13.90), and in-town rival Florida State (13.93). The Rattler placed 29th overall in the 45-person field.

Season highlights saw DeRosier named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Athlete of the Week five times between the indoor and outdoor seasons; he also medaled in every 110-meter hurdle final in the latter.

FAMU has five athletes participating in the NCAA East Prelims. On Thursday (May 23), Nya Blocker and Rori Lowe will compete in the 100 meters, and Katelynn Smith in the 400 hurdles. Blocker will also take on the 200 meters. Watch the action live on ESPN+. Live results are also available.
