Family Dollar, Dollar Tree face uncertain futures. Here are their Hudson Valley locations

Dollar Tree announced Wednesday it would close Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores in the coming years due to underperformance in 2023.

The company said in news release that after a performance review last year, it identified 970 Family Dollar stores and 30 Dollar Tree stores to permanently close, relocate or re-banner.

600 of the Family Dollar stores identified are set to close within the first half of the 2024 fiscal year. The remaining 400 stores will close at the end of each store's lease term.

Where are Family Dollar and Dollar Tree in NY's Lower Hudson Valley?

Dollar Tree has not yet released a list of stores that will close, but the Lower Hudson Valley only has two Family Dollar locations currently operating; one in Spring Valley and one in Yonkers. One other store on Warburton Ave. in Yonkers has been temporarily closed since 2023.

Dollar Tree acquired the Family Dollar brand in 2015. The Lower Hudson Valley has several Dollar Tree locations in operation:

  • 100 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains

  • 303 South Broadway, Yonkers

  • 896 McLean Avenue, Yonkers

  • 203 Gramatan Avenue, Mount Vernon

  • 333 S. Fulton Avenue, Mount Vernon

  • 806 Pelham Parkway, Pelham Manor

  • 435 North Avenue, New Rochelle

  • 973 Route 6, Mahopac

  • 52 Rockland Plaza, Nanuet

  • 1581 Route 202, Pomona

  • 12 Lake Ridge Plaza, Valley Cottage

  • 166 S. Liberty Drive, Stony Point

The closing announcement comes weeks after Family Dollar was forced to pay $41.6 million for storing products in a rat-infested warehouse in Arkansas. The company was charged with a misdemeanor for debasing FDA-regulated products by keeping them in unsanitary conditions.

Family Dollar entered a plea agreement in Eastern Arkansas District Court and admitted to shipping products from the location until January 2022, where the FDA found live and dead rodents, rodent feces, and evidence of nesting in the merchandise. A resulting product recall cost the company $34 million, according to a news release in 2022.

But despite the challenges, CEO Rick Dreiling said the company "finished the year strong" in 2023's fourth quarter.

“While we are still in the early stages of our transformation journey, I am proud of what our team accomplished in 2023 and see a long runway of growth ahead of us," Dreiling said. "As we look forward in 2024, we are accelerating our multi-price rollout at Dollar Tree and taking decisive action to improve profitability and unlock value at Family Dollar.”
