Faith Hewkin of Lakeview is Enquirer Athlete of the Week winner for April 29-May 4

BATTLE CREEK - The fans have spoken.

The winner of the latest Enquirer Athlete of the Week fan poll is Faith Hewkin of the Lakeview softball team.

Fans got behind Hewkin to help her edge finalists Stefanie DeLong, Sophia Kline and Ethan Tabiadon. Hewkin received 46 percent of the vote by the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline. Thanks to her fans, she will receive an Enquirer Athlete of the Week T-shirt.

Hewkin, a senior infielder for the Spartans, has had a standout final campaign with the Spartans. Two weeks ago, Hewkin had a mammoth series of games, hitting .385 with two home runs, nine RBI and an OPS of 1.357, which included a doubleheader sweep of rival Gull Lake. Hewkin kept her hot bat going this week with seven more runs scored. Hewkin will continue playing at Calvin College next season

"Faith has a big arm and quick release which allows her to make plays most regular third baseman can't complete. Her ability to field bunts and cut off balls in the hole is a big reason the Spartans are making a lot of ground ball outs this season. Faith's ability to excel on both offense and defense are one of the main reasons she is one of the best corner infielders in the city," Lakeview coach Jason McCullough said. "Faith puts in the extra effort throughout the year and is consistently trying to get better everyday. The results are validation of the hard work she puts in during the year."
