Face/Off 2 co-writer Adam Wingard has given fans a disappointing update on the sequel.

The follow-up to the 1997 action blockbuster starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta is currently in the scripting stage, with a scheduled release date yet to be set.

Speaking to io9 about his latest project, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wingard revealed that last year's WGA strike significantly delayed production on the anticipated sequel.

"Almost in the middle of production [on Godzilla x Kong], we were finishing our draft of the script and because both of us were too busy working on other things there was a plan to do a rewrite, and we picked a writer to work on it," he said.

"And then the writers' strike happened so that delayed things. Right now that's still inactive, so I think the plan with that one will be that writer will continue working, and whenever that draft is done, Simon [Barrett, co-writer] and I will get it back and we'll take another crack at it."

The original hit action thriller followed FBI agent Sean Archer (Travolta) and terrorist Castor Troy (Cage), who undergo an experimental surgery to swap their faces and, unexpectedly, their identities.

In 2021, Face/Off 2's co-writer Barrett detailed what fans can expect from the film by referencing Troy's famous 'peach' line from the first movie.

"It's funny because the peach line is really symbolic of something, isn't it? You don't want to pander to fans of the first movie," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"You don't want to put anything in the sequel that doesn't feel organic, but at the same time, there are certain things that people want to see Castor Troy do and say, if Castor Troy is coming back. So we're doing our best."

Face/Off 2 doesn't have a release date yet.
