Purchasing the perfect laptop can be a daunting endeavor these days given the myriad options available. To make your decision more manageable, consider narrowing your choice to a Dell laptop. Around since 1984, Dell was founded in a dorm room by Michael Dell, a student at University of Texas at Austin, at the time. Today, the company is still headquartered in Texas, and ranked 31st in the Fortune 500 listing for 2022.

With its range of models catering to different needs, Dell offers laptops known for build quality, sleek designs, bright screens, and durability. The Inspiron series, with its simple styling, caters to mainstream users with its blend of performance and affordability. For business professionals, the Latitude line combines durability and security features. The XPS series boasts premium aesthetics (tone-on-tone colors, edge-to-edge keys) and high-end specs, appealing to creative and power users.

Alienware (which Dell acquired in 2006), a gamer's haven, delivers cutting-edge graphics and processing power. The Precision range targets design, engineering, and scientific tasks with its robust performance. Lastly, the G Series provides budget-friendly gaming options.

To get started, determine if you need a laptop for casual tasks, gaming, or heavy-duty work, or some combination of those. Performance matters, too—the right balance of processor, RAM, and graphics card is vital. Portability might be a concern if you're frequently on the move, in which case you'll want something lighter in weight and with decent battery life.

Finding the right screen is perhaps the most important part of a laptop purchase. The display should match your size, resolution, and quality preferences. Bigger screens of around 17 inches offer more real estate to view documents and videos, but laptops with these large displays can be bulky to carry around. Models with smaller screens of about 13 inches are the perfect size for those who value portability. Don't forget to check the range of connectivity options for your devices.

When it comes to prices, Dell laptops run the gamut from $300 for a basic model such as a Chromebook, to over $2,000 for higher performance models. Below you'll find my choices for the best Dell laptops you can buy now.

Best Dell Laptops

The Expert: As a tech journalist, I am deeply immersed in the world of laptops, contributing to publications including The Atlantic and The New York Times. My own laptop is an indispensable tool that accompanies me throughout most of my waking hours. Having explored an array of laptop options, I've been testing out the latest Dell laptops for the last few weeks, and I’ve been delighted with their solid build quality, bright screens, and speedy performance.

What to Look for in a Dell Laptop

Processor

Top-of-the-line processors available today deliver fast speeds perfect for gaming or editing videos. However, going for speed can sometimes mean spending more on a laptop that doesn't have as long lasting battery life. When it comes to laptop processors from Dell, Intel's Core series is the go-to choice for many.

If you're looking for a balance between performance and value, the middle options in the Core and Ryzen lineups are your sweet spot. The priciest laptops from Dell come with Intel Core i9 H-Series processors, such as the G16, while the mid-range ones usually sport Core i5 processors, like the Dell 7330, giving you a respectable mix of price and performance.

Screen

Screen size and quality play a pivotal role in getting the best experience from your laptop. For most individuals, the optimal screen size falls within the range of 13 to 15 inches. This size range strikes a balance between portability and ample screen space to accomplish tasks effectively. Currently, the most prevalent resolutions found in laptops and 2-in-1 PCs slightly surpass 1920 x 1080 (commonly referred to as 1080p or Full HD). This choice keeps panel costs relatively reasonable and ensures that fonts remain sufficiently large for comfortable viewing. Investing in the best screen your budget allows is always wise, as your eyes will undoubtedly appreciate it in the long run.

Battery

The most recent laptops offer remarkable improvements in battery life. The key to these longer-lasting laptops, even with similar-sized batteries, lies in the efficiency boost of modern processors. Laptops can chug along for anywhere between 8- to 20 hours on a single charge. Aim for a laptop with a battery life of at least 10 hours to ensure dependable performance.

Ports

There are many types of ports, like HDMI, for videos, or a headset jack for headphones or to connect external speakers. But most people just need a USB-C port. It can connect to almost anything by itself or with an adapter. Find a laptop with HDMI ports if you don't want to carry extra stuff. These let you show your laptop screen on a TV or projector. They can even transmit clear pictures and great sound. Another helpful option is ethernet ports that can help your laptop get on the internet faster and steadier through wires.

Keyboard

If you're going to be typing frequently and consistently, go for a keyboard with a generous layout and well-spaced keys. Keep an eye on key travel too, which is how deep you need to press down on a key for it to register, as this can differ a lot between different models. Generally, bigger laptops have better keyboards because they don't have to squeeze things into a smaller space like more compact laptops do.

How We Selected Dell Laptops

I delved into the specifications and reviews of numerous new Dell laptops to curate my picks—aiming for those I'd gladly use myself and ones that cater to various budgets and tastes.

Full disclosure: I am a Mac fanatic and generally use a MacBook Pro for my work, but I'm nearly a convert after testing some of the latest Dell laptops. I was impressed by my top pick, the Dell XPS 17 9720, with its incredible build quality and performance.

Also, in this roundup, I opted not to include a Chromebook, which runs Google’s stripped-down Chrome operating system instead of Windows, since most users need more diverse software and greater processing power. While Chromebooks excel in simplicity and affordability, I looked for laptops with broader capabilities to accommodate creative and professional tasks.

XPS 17 9720

The Dell XPS 17 9720 sweeps in with a trifecta of style, power, and a whopping 17-inch display. It's able to blitz through tasks like complex spreadsheets and web browsing with dozens of tabs open with its 12th Generation Intel Core i7 processor.

Its bezel-free InfinityEdge screen is a visual delight with bright colors—it's among the best laptop screens I’ve used. From a design standpoint, the laptop offers a sophisticated look with the sleek curves of its frame.

It's a comfy cruise across the keyboard, with keys that depress easily, however the trackpad is harder to navigate, and not quite as responsive as others I’ve used. Thunderbolt 4 ports (high bandwidth and quick charging) bring in the connectivity A-game.

From an audio standpoint, this features quad speakers and Waves Nx 3D Audio tuned by multi-Grammy Award winning producer Jack Joseph Puig, who has worked with the Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Green Day, and many more.

Just remember, if portability is important, this model is hefty, at 5.6 pounds.

How Long Should You Charge Your Laptop and Why Buy a Convertible? Expert Sascha Brodsky Has The Answers.

To preserve the life of my laptop, should it be plugged in all the time?

It's not a good idea to keep your laptop plugged in all the time if you want to prolong its life. Despite modern laptops having safeguards against overcharging, the reality is that constant charging can still harm the battery's long-term health.

Try to let the battery drain and then recharge it from time to time. This habit assists in maintaining the battery's capacity. Also, steer clear of extreme temperatures and aim to keep the battery level between 20 percent and 80 percent for the best overall lifespan.

What’s the advantage of a 2-in-1 laptop? Any drawbacks?

Going for a 2-in-1 laptop is like getting a multitasking wizard. You can switch it between a laptop and a tablet, draw and write with your fingers or a pen, and take it wherever you want. It's perfect for enjoying videos and for its flexibility. But remember, these cool features come at a higher cost; you may sacrifice some power for it being so handy and the battery life might be impacted.

Is there a need for a 4K laptop?

4K laptops offer sharper visuals, making them great for image editing, video work, and enjoying 4K media. They excel in multitasking and provide an immersive experience for 4K videos and movies.

However, consider that 4K displays can drain the battery faster and might require a higher budget due to their premium resolution. If you're into gaming, a 4K laptop can deliver stunning visuals, but you might need a powerful graphics card. If your activities primarily involve standard tasks, a Full HD laptop could be more practical in terms of battery life and cost.

Our Expert, Sascha Brodsky, on His Dream Laptop, His Favorite Laptop, and the Laptop He Wishes Would Get a Modern Reboot

Q: Laptop you wish you owned?

A: I crave perhaps the least practical laptop of all time, the GPD Pocket 3. This tiny laptop has an 8-inch screen and a compact keyboard that’s too small to write a novel on. Nevertheless, it’s super cute and weighs just 15.5 ounces. Plus, it has a surprising list of features, including a 1920 x 1200 resolution, a touch screen, integrated graphics, a camera, a 7-hour battery life, a 1 TB hard drive, 8 GB of RAM, and a 1.1 GHz processor.

Buy GPD Pocket 3

Q: Favorite laptop purchase?

A: This might date me, but I loved the IBM Thinkpad 701C from 1995 far more than it deserved. My devotion was due to its unusual design with a folding “butterfly” keyboard that allowed the laptop to fold up small but have a solid place to type. It was kind of like having both a mini laptop and a large one simultaneously. There’s never been anything like the 701C, and I keep hoping some manufacturer will bring back the folding keyboard.

Q: Laptop purchase you regret?

A: The Sony 505-G was one of the prettiest laptops ever made when it was released in 1998. It had an iridescent aluminum case and weighed a stunningly light 3.1 pounds for its time. I loved the look of it, but it was also unusable. Its processor was so underpowered that it could barely open Microsoft Word. The battery life also could be measured in minutes rather than hours. Still, I’d be happy to buy a reincarnation of this laptop if it ever got updated with modern specs since the design was just so terrific.
