Expendables 4 director opens up about the saga’s future after box office fiasco

Expend4bles director Scott Waugh has opened up about the future of the series following its lacklustre opening weekend at the box office.

The fourth instalment in the action franchise had a torrid time with audiences over the weekend, with the measly $8.3 million across its opening weekend being a record low for the series.

Despite the poor box office returns and rumours that the latest entry was already envisaged as the final instalment, Waugh has maintained that a fifth film could be on the cards, with the director teasing the possibility to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I think the door in any franchise is wide open when the fans want one,” he said. “How many times have you and I heard that? They said the same thing on John Wick, but they’re talking about John Wick 5 now. So if the fans want one, Hollywood’s not shallow enough to deny the money possibility.”

Waugh, who has also directed Need for Speed and Hidden Strike, also spoke about the challenge of juggling the stacked cast for the series, which includes Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, Dolph Lundgren, Megan Fox and 50 Cent.

“You just have to be confident in the story you’re telling… You have to lead in a way that they trust you, and if you gain their trust, they’ll do whatever you want. It’s very important as a director that you know the story you’re telling and that the actors believe in the story you’re telling.

“They will then adhere to your advice because they know we’re all telling the right story and the same story. So when you’re dealing with alpha males and alpha females, it’s extremely important to put another alpha into that equation or you’re going to get eaten alive.”

Expend4bles is in cinemas now.
