The Exorcist: Believer director David Gordon Green has revealed that the film's demon may not be Pazuzu after all.

The upcoming film brings back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, who is seen in the trailer recognising this film's demonic antagonist as she says: "We've met before." This implies that it's the same one from all those years ago.

But in an interview with SFX magazine, Green states that the creature from Assyrian and Babylonian mythology isn't necessarily the demon from the original or this new sequel, despite the fact that Pazuzu is mentioned by name in author William Peter Blatty's Exorcist novels, which the films are based on.

"I'm so tempted to tell you the name of our demon, but we don't say it in the movie," the director teased. "So part of me just wants you to figure it out.

"Or if you're a demonologist, then you know, and then if you have a friend that's a demonologist, that's a great dinner. I'm sorry, I'll probably say at some point, but I'm holding back as long as I can."

Explaining his bombshell revelation about the first film, the director said: "It's not like the original film talks about Pazuzu.

"When I got really serious about this, and you go back into the original film, you see the extraordinary ambiguity throughout it, which is awesome. But today's audience wants definition. They want to know who, what, why, how. That's a really interesting evolution. But can't we be ambiguous?"

The Exorcist: Believer will be released in cinemas on October 6.
