Exclusive: Hollyoaks lining up a major change in Ste Hay's storylines

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Kieron Richardson has revealed that Ste Hay's storylines are about to take a dramatic turn.

Ste has featured in more comedic plots over the past couple of years, including his new friendship with Sienna Blake and romantic dramas with his husband James Nightingale.

In the past, Ste has been known for taking centre stage in big issue-based storylines, including the far-right extremism plot in 2019.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the Inside Soap Awards 2023, Kieron revealed: "I've just had the most exciting meeting that I've had in a very long time. I can say that the name Hollyoaks is going to be on everybody's lips – or should I say that your jaw is going to hit the floor that much that you won't be able to speak?

"The stories that are coming out, not just mine but for other people, it's really exciting."

He continued: "I loved having the comedy. It was something a little bit different. I am ready now to go back to 'bad boy' Ste. The tracksuits are going to get more muted again. We're going back to serious acting – no more silliness.

"I've done it, I enjoyed it, I won an award here [at the Inside Soap Awards] last year with Anna [Passey, who plays Sienna], which was amazing, but I'm ready to pull my socks up now and get back to doing what Ste does best."

Asked what all of this means for Ste and James' marriage, Kieron teased: "There's lots of stuff coming up in the relationship to do with [Ste's] kids and the family, so there's a bit of that going on.

"Then something is going to happen in Ste's life in January, which will alter his direction completely and change a lot of people's lives."

Kieron confirmed that Ste will also play a role in the new Carter Shepherd storyline, which will explore the dangers of conversion therapy.

Show bosses had previously announced that Ste's son Lucas, who will explore his sexuality in upcoming scenes, will be central to the plot alongside fellow teen Dillon Ray.

Kieron said: "As far as I know, I've got bits to do with that, bits to do with James and Lucas, which is separate to the Carter storyline, then something in January which is whopping. I just want to tell you but I can't, but it's so exciting."

Praising Oscar Curtis, who has taken over the role of Lucas, Kieron laughed: "People say he looks a little bit like me, so that's great casting! Thank you Peter [Hunt] in casting for doing that.

"I think it's great that [Oscar] wants to learn everything. He's like a sponge, he's asking loads of questions. He's got a really big storyline on his shoulders so I know he's got the pressure. Any questions he's got, I tell him, 'ask me, ask me, I'll help you as much as I can'."
