Exclusive: Coronation Street star Paddy Bever on drama in Max's romance story

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Paddy Bever has hinted that Max Turner's past will come back to haunt him when his new romance storyline begins.

Max is currently trying to move on with his life after nearly four months locked away at a Secure Training Centre, as punishment for his involvement with Griff Reynolds' far-right gang.

Earlier this year, Corrie bosses confirmed that Max would find a new romantic partner upon his release from the STC.

Spoiler pictures released by the soap have since shown Max growing closer to new character Bec, who's the ex-girlfriend of Max's STC friend Gav.

Gav has asked Max for help with getting back on better terms with Bec, but it seems that Max himself could become her boyfriend in upcoming scenes.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the British Soap Awards 2023, Paddy stayed coy about the possibility. However, he teased the story by sharing: "It's an unexpected partner for Max. Max is also an unexpected partner for that person.

"The partner might not exactly know who Max is and what he's done – and this person might be forced to come to terms with that."

Discussing the slow approach to Max's redemption, Paddy continued: "I'm pleased, because I want it to be as close to real life as possible. These things don't happen overnight. Radicalisation is a very serious thing and it happens a lot – far more than people would think.

"In Max's case, he had a while of being dragged into this place where he was lied to a lot – and a lot of things were fed into his head.

"There comes a point where he has to say: 'What I did was wrong and the organisation I was involved with was wrong'.

"I think that realisation doesn't come overnight, especially with someone who's been so heavily radicalised and brought into something like that."

Max was released from the STC this week, but he was ordered to wear an ankle tag and stay away from Speed Daal after the previous incidents involving the Nazir family.

The teen immediately found himself in trouble for breaking these rules when he visited Speed Daal to pass on an apology letter to Alya.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
