We asked readers where to find the best grilled cheese sandwich in Whatcom County and the votes are in.
The poll had 12 local restaurant options in Whatcom County including Skylark’s Cafe, Avenue Bread, The Sandwich Odyssey, The Black Cat and Cedars Restaurant and Lounge.
The unscientific poll received 115 votes.

Avenue Bread received 31 votes to top the list of the best grilled cheese in Whatcom County.
Avenue Bread also recently won reader polls for best freshly baked bread and best breakfast sandwiches in Whatcom County.
Avenue Bakery, the sister company to Avenue Bread cafes, delivers its fresh bread to four cafe locations daily in Whatcom County, according to previous reporting by The Bellingham Herald.
The cafes serve breakfast, soups, salads, bread and pastries and a variety of sandwiches. Visitors can try a classic grilled cheese, turkey melt, grilled eggplant or turkey pesto sandwich on the bakery’s variety of fresh breads.
Avenue Bread cafes are also popular online, as each cafe has a 4-star rating from 470 across all four cafes’ Yelp pages.

Avenue Bread’s four cafes have various hours of operation.
▪ Avenue Bread’s Fairhaven and Railroad locations are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The Fairhaven location is at 1135 11th St. The Railroad location is at 1313 Railroad Ave.
▪ Avenue Bread’s Lynden cafe is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and is located at 444 Front St.
▪ The James Street location is open from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at 2301 James St.

The Black Cat is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. The Black Cat offers a late-night menu after 10 p.m. until close, and is located at 1200 Harris Ave. in Bellingham.
