Former Dallas Cowboys player Greg Ellis wrote and directed a new movie that premieres in Fort Worth this week.

Ellis, 48, was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft and played defensive end for America’s Team from 1998 to 2009. After coaching stints at Texas College and Southwest Assemblies of God University, the Cowboys hired Ellis as assistant defensive line coach just a few months ago.

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Ellis is gearing up release his film, “My Dear,” which follows a family disrupted by untreated mental health issues.

The film premieres at I.M. Terrell Academy’s performing arts center at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are on sale now.

“My Dear” is a special project for Ellis, who said he wanted to do something to help his family and friends struggling with mental health disorders.

Ellis himself deals with anxiety and wanted to contribute to the narrative around mental health.

“The ‘My Dear’ film project will help destigmatize the negative stereotypes associated with mental health disorders and encourage people to get the help they need,” Ellis said in a press release.
