Everything We Know About Women Talking, Based on the Book by Miriam Toews

One of the most anticipated films of the fall is Women Talking, based on the book by Miriam Toews.

Starring Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, and Ben Whishaw, Women Talking tells the story of remote religious Mennonite community dealing with the aftermath of sexual assault. It will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September; the festival describes the film as "a drama of harrowing revelations, fraught alliances, and the search for grace."

Here's everything we know so far about Women Talking—and how to watch the movie.

It's based on the critically acclaimed book by Miriam Toews.

In the book, eight Mennonite women living in a cloistered community climb into a hay loft to conduct a secret meeting. They have just learned that for the past two years, men in their community have been drugging and attacking women—and passing it off as demons punishing them for their sins. While the men are gone in the city, these women must decide what to do.

Per the synopsis: "While the men of the colony are off in the city, attempting to raise enough money to bail out the rapists and bring them home, these women―all illiterate, without any knowledge of the world outside their community and unable even to speak the language of the country they live in―have very little time to make a choice: Should they stay in the only world they’ve ever known or should they dare to escape?"

The cast is filled with incredible actors.

The women will be played by Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, and Michelle McLeod, and Ben Whishaw will play the single man present, who is there to keep the notes of the meeting. Women Talking is directed by Sarah Polley—it's her first feature film in nearly a decade.

There's no official premiere date yet.

However, the film will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival in September 2022. Women Talking has a runtime of 104 minutes.
