The Nun 2 release date: When can we expect The Nun 2?

The wait is almost over as The Nun 2 will be released in cinemas on September 8, arriving five years after the first movie.

Filming took place from October 2022 to January 2023 and despite some recent release date shifts by Warner Bros, the horror sequel has remained exactly where it is as an early Halloween treat for fans.

The Nun 2 trailer: Watch The Nun 2 trailer here!

Warner Bros released the trailer for The Nun 2 on July 6, 2023, revealing the first look at the return of Valak.

If you missed it above, you can watch it below:

The Nun 2 runtime: How long is The Nun 2?

It's been confirmed that The Nun 2 runs for 109 minutes and 35 seconds, or just shy of one hour and 50 minutes if you prefer.

That's 13 minutes longer than the first movie, which ran for 96 minutes and 23 seconds, but it's far from the longest Conjuring movie which remains The Conjuring 2 (133 minutes and 44 seconds).

The Nun 2 cast: Who's coming back for The Nun 2?

American Horror Story star Taissa Farmiga is back as Sister Irene, and she'll be joined by Jonas Bloquet as Maurice 'Frenchie' Theriault.

However, it doesn't look like Demián Bichir is back as Father Burke.

Of course, Bonnie Aarons is returning as Valak — because it wouldn't be a Nun movie without the terrifying titular character.

Newcomers for the sequel include Euphoria and The Suicide Squad star Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose Downey.

Behind the scenes, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It director Michael Chaves is directing. Akela Cooper wrote the script, with Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing revising.

Cooper's name should get you excited for the sequel, as she's the writer behind Malignant and M3GAN.

The first Nun movie ended with appearances from Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. It was archive footage from The Conjuring, as Frenchie was the person we saw being exorcised in the first movie.

Could we see a bigger appearance from the Warrens in the sequel? There's a long-running fan theory that Sister Irene is the younger version of Lorraine, so the sequel might be the place to confirm (or deny) it.

"I do know where, potentially, if The Nun works out, where The Nun 2 could lead to and how that ties back to Lorraine's story that we've set up with the first two Conjurings and make it all come all full circle," Wan said back in August 2017.

Has the truth been there in front of our faces this entire time?

The Nun 2 plot: What's The Nun 2 about?

Along with the first trailer, we got the official plot synopsis for The Nun 2 which reads as follows:

"1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun."

We don't know how many Conjuring links to expect beyond Valak, but Chaves has teased that there are surprises for fans.

"Anyone who saw the first Conjuring knows that Maurice is possessed and then exorcised by the Warrens, and we know that that happens in the late '60s in the Conjuring timeline," he explained.

"This is set in the '50s so we're still a ways off from that. The events of what happens in-between this starts to fill out that story a little bit more.

"There's other big ideas and big swings in there, and it's filled with a bunch of cool Easter eggs. Without giving anything away it continues to fill out the picture and the bigger canvas."

The Nun 2 will be released in cinemas on September 8.
