After an extremely successful second chapter, Hacks is returning once again. Season two of the Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder comedy picked up a whopping 17 nominations at the 2022 Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Smart, an award she won.

"We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season, and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show," Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max said in a statement about the renewal.

Season two gave viewers a lot of closure: Deborah's stand-up special allowed her to reclaim her space in the comedy world, and she fired Ava so her young assistant would finally pursue her own dreams.

"We wanted to feel like there was resolution and it was really satisfying. And I think when you feel really satisfied at the end, it can often feel like something final. But Lucia said this, so I'm going to steal her quote. We feel like this is only the second chapter in a larger story that we want to tell. And when we pitched the show, we actually pitched where the series would end, which is not what you saw in episode 8 of season 2," co-creator Paul W. Downs told Entertainment Weekly.

"We just wanted it to feel like there was resolution to this season, but also make it a cliffhanger in itself because it's sort of like: What does the future hold for these two women?" he added. Therefore, season three will follow Deborah and Ava into the future—whatever that holds.

Smart and Einbinder will definitely be returning to reprise their roles, and other cast members include Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Kaitlin Olson, Christopher McDonald, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, and Lorenza Izzo. In season three, Downs and Megan Stalter will now be series regulars, reprising their roles as Jimmy (Ava and Deborah's assistant) and Kayla (Jimmy's assistant), respectively. There's also a starry guest cast line-up, including Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Bucatinsky, George Wallace, and Tony Goldwyn, per Variety. In April 2024, the first trailer dropped (watch above).

Hacks season three will premiere on May 2, 2024; two episodes will drop every week until the finale on May 30.
