The dramatic 13th season of Call the Midwife is coming to a close, but fans of the nurses of Nonnatus House can breathe easy, because the midwives of Poplar will be returning for yet another outing. Way back in February 2023, the BBC confirmed that it had picked up the series at least through 2026, with an order for season 14 and 15, so there's no need to worry about the possibility of cancelation any time soon. However, there's still plenty of anticipation for what the future will hold for everyone's favorite midwives.

Here's everything we know so far:

When will season 14 debut?

Call the Midwife typically has a very stable schedule—new episodes generally air in the UK from January to March, with the season arriving in the US shortly after it finishes its UK run. So far there's been no indication that season 14 will be any different, so we can anticipate getting new episodes in early 2025.

As with previous seasons, season 14 will encompass 8 hour-long episodes as well as an annual Christmas Special.

It will kick off a new decade for the midwives

Season 13 of the period drama took place in 1969, and as per tradition, the new season will pick back up the following year, meaning the midwives will officially be ladies of the '70s.

"Series 14 is set in 1970, launching us into an exciting new decade," show creator Heidi Thomas confirmed. "We can’t wait to bring you another season full of touching, exciting, emotional stories from Nonnatus House."

Beyond that, relatively little is known about what the season could hold, but as filming commenced on the 2024 Christmas Special in April, it's likely we'll have a while to wait before more script details are released.

Is Nurse Trixie returning?

One of the major plot points for season 13 centered around the financial difficulties of Nonnatus's longest-tenured nurse Trixie (played by Helen Geroge) and her new husband, Matthew (Olly Rix). In an attempt to find financial success again, Matthew headed off to live in New York during the season with the couple's infant son, while Trixie remained in Poplar, adding to tensions within the family. However, at the end of the season, Trixie announced she would be joining Matthew in America, at least for a time, which gave the couple something to be excited about—and fans some anxiety, as George's Trixie has become one of the series's most beloved characters.

Fortunately, George has apparently confirmed that this won't mark a permanent exit for Trixie, resharing an Instagram post by the show's make-up supervisor Mariella Spoto, with the caption: "Series 14 awaits... @callthemidwife.official."

The chances of Rix also returning to the series are somewhat less clear, with some outlets reporting that he will not be reprising his role. Thus far there does not appear to have been official confirmation of his exit.

Catch up on Call the Midwife

Season 13 of Call the Midwife is now available to stream through PBS Passport and for purchase through Amazon Prime. Seasons 1—12 are currently available on Netflix; the 13th season will likely also appear on the streamer, though it's not currently clear when.

Read the books

Call the Midwife is actually inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, who really served as a midwife in Poplar in the 1950s and '60s. Worth ultimately wrote a trio of books about her work, which Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas used to create the beloved show.
